8. Higashi no Eden (Eden of the East)

Synopsis: ‘Careless Monday’ was a mysterious missile strike that took place in Japan months prior to the events of Higashi no Eden. Oddly enough there were absolutely no casualties and because of this, the event was quickly forgotten. Moving forward, the story begins in Washington D.C where Saki Morimi is in the middle of her college graduation trip as she suddenly finds herself in a bind. Without warning, she is unknowingly ‘rescued’ by a naked young man named Akira Takizawa and from that moment her life was never the same. With amnesia and 8.2 billion yen loaded on a mysterious phone, Takizawa is nothing short of suspicious, but all of this doesn’t matter as Saki quickly befriends him. As a result, she has essentially invited herself to be a part of a death game involving money, mysterious cellphone-like devices, and the ‘liberation’ of the world. Higashi no Eden is a story of Saki’s battle to solve the mystery behind Takizawa’s identity as he himself takes on other wielders of the cell phones and with his memories coming back to him — will they potentially link him to the act of terror several months ago.

7. Clannad + After Story

Synopsis: Tomoya Okazaki regularly cuts class because he doesn’t think life is particularly interesting and has no interest in his studies, future, or much of anything else. One day he comes across a lonely looking girl named Nagisa Furukawa. After this initial meeting the two begin seeing each other a lot more, and while Okazaki doesn’t seem like he could care less initially, he eventually gets closer to her and decides to aid her in achieving her dream — restoring the high school drama club. As his relationship with Nagisa grows, Tomoya begins to let more and more people into his life, helping them with their own problems along the way. Clannad is a heartwrenching narrative that depicts the fragility of life and how things can change in the blink of an eye.
